At the tender age of eleven Duncan purchased his first guitar (a cheap nylon strung Spanish guitar) and struggled to hold down the strings let alone the chords. After swapping his Wein cassette recorder, with one of his mates at school, for a “Woolworths” electric guitar and amplifier, (Audition) that was it he was going to be Peter Green !!
The first band he joined practiced in a funeral directors’ premises, and regularly had complaints from the police with references to “waking the dead” and certain musicians “turning in their graves”. They managed one gig before deciding women and drink were far more interesting.
Moving on swiftly through 20 odd years Duncan now married with 2 children was goaded into jamming with some work mates which gave him the bug to start playing again. This culminated in him taking lessons and eventually teaching others.
In 1990 Duncan worked in a prison and once again was goaded into forming a band this time with inmates !!! some of whom were exceedingly talented, and had played with some big band names. Unfortunately due to circumstances the band was not allowed to gig outside the gates, but did manage to perform to “visitors” even HTV on one occasion (No touring here then !)
Duncan then joined a cabaret band as a roadie initially then getting promoted to “stand in” guitarist, eventually getting the gig as lead guitarist. It was with this band that Duncan first met Charmaigne. After 14 years and playing numerous gigs to mention he decided to move on and play the music that he really loved “The Blues”.
An advertisement went out to form a “Blues band” and after a long and complex selection process came the birth of “Shades of Blue”
Shades of Blue had a good run on the local circuit and even supporting some big name Blues artists, however all good things come to an end although fortunately it was all amicable.
Along with two of the members of "Shades of Blue" Duncan then formed another Blues band "Django" again this band played the local circuit however adding a few festivals into the bargain.
Django came to an abrupt end as the front man had to retire and hence came the conception of SIREN !!!
A completely new genre to Duncan however, he has lapped it up and is loving every minute of being able to play with the talent that is in the band.
Duncan owns a vast array of guitars and with “SIREN” uses Gibson Les Paul Classic (Gold Top) / Fender Stratocaster / Fender Paisley Stratocaster / Marshall JCM900 Amplifier along with a plethora of effects pedals.. .
